I really quite liked this case (especially for being a filler). The trick was so convoluted yet it made sense (although I have to doubt how well it'd work in real life). All of the evidence like, why they didn't make it look like suicide, the masks, the weird bloodstains on the masks and the knife, and why it was a locked room, all just fit so perfectly together at the end. And the way that the culprit accidentally said the proof so early on that the viewer actually had a chance to catch that and figure out who the culprit is (although the proof was a bit flimsy, I feel like the culprit could've talked their way out of that like he could've said Kogoro heard him wrong). Idk I've just always liked this filler

Huh, that is so peculiar now that you mention it. The reason I said that is cuz, at the very end of the episode, they said the Last Wizard of the Century was airing in April. But then I checked the release dates of movie 3 and 4 and this episode, and you're right. Movie 3 came out before this. Odd...

the audio for the movie promo here in episode 184 (airdate March 13, 2000 according to the Wikipedia page that lists the Conan episodes) was probably recorded incorrectly in season 5 or early season 6. Movie 3 opened Apr 17, 1999 according to Last Wizard's My Anime List entry. Case Closed Movie 4: Captured In Her Eyes opened Apr 22, 2000 once more from MAL. as best as i can tell the Conan movies ALWAYS open in April and there's one per year (for the first 11 i checked on MAL).

from my experience anime productions, especially those like Conan that have no hiatus/cour breaks AKA run continuously, do their VA recording sessions as early and as often as possible. so the promo was either A recorded incorrectly, or B placed in the incorrect TV episode by the editing staff.

sometimes VA recording sessions for series like Conan have to be jammed together like sardines in a can. schedules for some VAs conflict even on these older shows, some actors had other gigs to work on. so, episode after episode after episode are done with the actors running lines and checking scripts and getting the writers' and directors' input nigh on in real-time.

occasionally some scenes from subsequent episodes could be slid into the schedule with little to no notice to the actors. say, Ran's VA has a public appearance that would last for 2 days travel and attendance. so she'd be out of the studio that whole time. but, she has only 10 or 20 lines to run for the next three episodes in the schedule. so they'd stack HER up and get those lines down on tape as quickly as possible to work with her schedule.

maybe somebody in the recording staff might have mis-labeled this promo, or as i said before the audio editing staff might have inserted the promo into the wrong episode.

we've seen it before in Conan eh ceiling? EPISODE promos put in the wrong order, giving info on one that's coming in TWO weeks not NEXT week. ;) and those ones had not only audio but video files to work into the tail end of that episode.

Wouldnt the string just snap. From the looks of it the mask if made out of wood. When you search it up. A wooden mask usually weighs around 800g (0.8kg) too 3kg (3000g) multiply that by 2 and add the zeros and you'll get 1600000g (160kg) to 600kg (600000g) plus a knife (that would maybe add a few hundred grams).
Now first you would need to be strong enough to drag that weight second i dont think the rubber string could hold that much weight.

I doubt there is absolutely no commercially available string of this strength.
As for the weight, it is pretty impressive, I guess more realistically he could have used a weight, like some furniture lying around or the stairs' railing. But at that weight the string must have left marks around the door's upper opening,tho I suppose they wouldn't give us this because it would be too easy to figure out the method.

The trick used was truly horrifying. I was left gagged watching it all break down. that was genius.
and those masks are very disturbing, that old woman was sick in the head for collecting creepy masks.
